April 21, 2026 – Cupertino, CA – Apple Explores PIR for Home Ecosystem
A patent application published by the US Patent and Trademark Office reveals Apple is exploring the integration of PIR sensors across its smart home product lineup, including HomePod, Apple TV, and HomeKit accessories.
The patent describes using PIR sensors for occupancy detection to automate lighting, HVAC, and media playback. For example, a HomePod with integrated PIR could pause music when you leave the room and resume when you return.
Key claims in the patent include room-level occupancy detection using distributed PIR sensors, privacy-preserving presence detection (no cameras), integration with HomeKit automations, and energy savings through occupancy-based HVAC control.
The patent was filed in October 2025 and published this month. It remains unclear if or when Apple will release products incorporating the technology.
