UL Publishes First Safety Standard for PIR Occupancy Sensors: UL 2680

April 11, 2026 – Northbrook, IL – New Standard for Occupancy Sensors

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has published UL 2680, the first dedicated safety standard for passive infrared occupancy sensors used in life safety applications. The standard addresses reliability, false alarm immunity, and fail-safe operation.

The standard applies to PIR sensors used in security systems, fire alarm systems (for occupant location), emergency lighting control, and healthcare monitoring.

Key requirements include detection reliability testing across temperature ranges (-20°C to +60°C), false alarm immunity tests for common sources (sunlight, HVAC, pets), and fail-safe operation with self-diagnostics.

Manufacturers have a 24-month transition period to certify products to UL 2680. By March 2028, all new life safety installations must use UL 2680 certified sensors.
