Google Announces Matter Support for Nest PIR Motion Sensors

April 18, 2026 – Mountain View, CA – Nest Sensors Go Multi-Platform

Google has announced that its Nest PIR motion sensors now support the Matter smart home standard, enabling interoperability with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and other Matter-certified platforms.

The update applies to both the Nest Detect (security) and Nest Temperature Sensor lines. Existing sensors will receive a firmware update automatically over the next two weeks.

“Matter support means Nest sensors can now trigger automations across different ecosystems,” said a Google spokesperson. “A Nest motion sensor can turn on a Philips Hue light or trigger an Amazon Alexa routine.”

The update also adds new occupancy sensing features to the Matter standard, including configurable sensitivity and hold time.

Availability: The firmware update is rolling out now. New sensors shipping after May 1, 2026 will have Matter support pre-installed.
