Overview
A 200-bed senior living facility in Florida was experiencing 15-20 fall-related incidents per month. Many falls occurred at night when residents got up to use the bathroom, and staff response times averaged 15-20 minutes. The facility needed a non-intrusive monitoring solution that preserved resident privacy while improving safety.
The Challenge
The facility faced several specific issues:
- Falls often went undetected for 30+ minutes
- Staff could not monitor all residents simultaneously
- Cameras were not acceptable for privacy reasons
- Wearable call buttons were often forgotten or removed
- Nighttime bathroom trips were the highest risk period
The Solution
The facility implemented a PIR-based fall detection and activity monitoring system:
- Sensors: Panasonic EKMB series with high sensitivity
- Configuration: 2 sensors per room (bedroom + bathroom)
- Coverage: 360° ceiling mount for full room coverage
- Integration: Nurse call system and staff mobile alerts
- Quantity: 400 sensors across 200 resident rooms
Fall detection algorithm:
- Rapid motion pattern (characteristic of falling)
- Followed by prolonged inactivity (30 seconds minimum)
- Location tracking (bathroom = higher risk)
- Time of day weighting (nighttime = higher risk)
Activity monitoring tracked daily patterns: bed exit frequency, bathroom visits, and general movement. Deviations triggered alerts to caregivers.
Implementation
The rollout was completed over four months:
- Month 1: Pilot program in 20 rooms (40 sensors)
- Month 2: Wing A (80 rooms, 160 sensors)
- Month 3: Wing B (80 rooms, 160 sensors)
- Month 4: Common areas and staff training
Staff received training on interpreting alerts and responding to potential falls. The system was configured to reduce false alarms (sensitivity adjustments based on resident mobility).
Results
After 12 months of operation:
| Metric | Before | After | Improvement | Monthly falls | Fall detection time | Serious injuries from falls | Staff response time | Resident confidence (survey) |
