March 10, 2026 – Wrocław, Poland – Panasonic Expands European Manufacturing Footprint
Panasonic Corporation today officially opened its new €150 million PIR sensor manufacturing facility in Wrocław, Poland. The plant will produce high-sensitivity PIR sensors for the European building automation, security, and smart home markets, with an annual capacity of 50 million units.
The facility is Panasonic’s third PIR sensor factory globally, joining existing plants in Malaysia and Japan. It represents the company’s largest single investment in European sensor production.
Strategic Rationale
The new factory positions Panasonic to serve the rapidly growing European market, driven by the EU’s updated Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and increasing demand for smart building solutions.
“Europe is our fastest-growing market for PIR sensors, with the EPBD mandate creating unprecedented demand,” said Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Panasonic Industrial Solutions. “Local production allows us to serve customers faster, reduce supply chain risks, and comply with European content requirements for public projects.”
Facility Specifications
- Location: Wrocław, Poland (Lower Silesian Special Economic Zone)
- Investment: €150 million
- Floor space: 25,000 square meters
- Annual capacity: 50 million sensors
- Employment: 450 direct jobs, estimated 1,200 indirect jobs
- Production start: Q2 2026

Panasonic claims the facility will achieve defect rates below 10 parts per million (ppm), among the lowest in the industry.
Local Content Benefits
Production in Poland offers several advantages for European customers:
- Faster delivery: 2-3 week lead times vs. 8-10 weeks from Asia
- Lower shipping costs: Reduced transportation expenses
- Supply chain resilience: Protection from trade disputes and shipping disruptions
- Local content compliance: Meets “Made in EU” requirements for public tenders
- Reduced carbon footprint: Lower transportation emissions
Product Lines
The factory will produce:
- EKMB series: Ultra-low power sensors (1-6 µA) for wireless applications
- PaPIRs series: High-sensitivity sensors with up to 416 detection zones
- Automotive-grade sensors: AEC-Q100 qualified for child presence detection
- Custom designs: Tailored sensors for major European OEMs
European Customer Base
Panasonic already supplies PIR sensors to numerous European customers, including:
- Siemens (building automation)
- Schneider Electric (lighting control)
- Bosch (security systems)
- ABB (industrial automation)
- Numerous smart home device manufacturers
Industry Reaction
“Panasonic’s investment demonstrates confidence in the European market and recognition that local production is becoming essential,” said Dr. Hans Weber, analyst at EuroTechnology Partners. “Other sensor manufacturers will likely follow suit as EPBD implementation accelerates.”
Government Support
The Polish government provided approximately €20 million in incentives, including tax breaks and infrastructure support. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki attended the opening ceremony, calling it “a vote of confidence in Poland’s manufacturing sector.”
Conclusion
Panasonic’s new Polish factory represents a significant expansion of European PIR sensor production capacity. As EPBD implementation approaches, local manufacturing capability will be a competitive advantage for serving the European market.
