The European Parliament has approved the expansion of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) to require occupancy sensors in residential buildings. The vote passed 487-96, with implementation scheduled for January 2030.
The new requirements mandate occupancy sensors in hallways, stairwells, and common areas of apartment buildings, with optional sensors in individual dwelling units. The expansion is expected to add approximately 50 million sensors annually to EU demand, representing a €500-700 million market opportunity.
“This vote represents a significant step toward EU energy efficiency goals,” said a European Commission spokesperson. “Occupancy sensors will help reduce residential energy consumption by 10-15%.”
Member states have until 2029 to transpose the directive into national law. Existing commercial building requirements remain unchanged.
Industry analysts expect the mandate to benefit major sensor manufacturers including Panasonic, Murata, and Honeywell, as well as building automation companies such as Siemens and Schneider Electric.
