July 16, 2026 – Bentonville, AR – Walmart Expands Energy Efficiency Program
Walmart has announced the deployment of PIR occupancy sensors in 500 of its U.S. stores as part of a broader energy efficiency initiative. The sensors will control lighting and HVAC systems based on actual customer presence.
The Deployment
- Number of stores: 500
- Sensors per store: Approximately 200
- Total sensors: 100,000
- Areas covered: Aisles, storage rooms, restrooms, break rooms, offices
- Expected energy savings: 25% lighting, 15% HVAC
Sensor Specifications
Walmart selected the OPTEX LX-402 for its reliability and long range (30m with curtain lens). The sensors are integrated with the store’s existing building management system.
Projected Impact
- Annual energy savings: 50 million kWh
- Cost savings: $6 million per year
- CO2 reduction: 25,000 metric tons
- Payback period: 18 months
“This deployment demonstrates the scalability of PIR occupancy sensing for large retail environments,” said a Walmart facilities manager. “We plan to expand to additional stores in 2027.”
Rollout Schedule
The deployment began in June 2026 and will be completed by December 2026.
