Home Assistant Adds Native PIR Sensor Dashboard for Occupancy Visualization

July 9, 2026 – Home Assistant Community Update

The Home Assistant team has released version 2026.7, which includes a new occupancy dashboard that visualizes motion history from PIR sensors across your smart home. The dashboard provides at-a-glance insights into room occupancy patterns.

New Features

  • Motion timeline: Visual history of motion events over 24 hours
  • Heat map: Most active times of day by room
  • Occupancy trends: Weekly and monthly activity summaries
  • Energy correlation: Overlay energy usage with occupancy data
  • Presence simulation: Random motion generation for security when away

The dashboard automatically detects PIR sensors via their device_class and aggregates data from Zigbee, Z-Wave, ESPHome, and Matter sensors.

Privacy Controls

All motion data is stored locally. Users can configure data retention periods (default: 30 days) and exclude specific sensors from the dashboard.

Availability

Home Assistant 2026.7 is available now as an automatic update for most installations.
