PIR Sensor Shortage Looms as Automotive and Building Demand Collide

July 4, 2026 – Global Supply Chain Alert

Industry analysts are warning of a potential PIR sensor shortage beginning in late 2027 as automotive child presence detection and building energy mandates create competing demand for limited production capacity.

Demand Drivers

Three major mandates are converging:

  • US Hot Cars Act (2028): 150-200 million automotive PIR sensors/year
  • EU EPBD (2028): 40-50 million commercial building sensors/year
  • China building code (2029): 200-300 million sensors/year

Total projected demand: 400-550 million sensors annually by 2029.

Production Capacity Gap

Current global production capacity is approximately 1.4-1.5 billion units per year. While this seems sufficient, the challenge is that automotive and building sensors require different qualifications (AEC-Q100 vs. commercial), limiting supply flexibility.

Analysts project a shortage of 10-15% in 2028-2029, leading to:

  • Extended lead times (8-12 weeks → 20-30 weeks)
  • Price increases of 15-25%
  • Allocation for large customers

Manufacturer Responses

Major manufacturers are expanding capacity:

  • Panasonic: +50M units (Poland, Malaysia)
  • Murata: +280M units (Philippines, Japan, Malaysia)
  • Chinese manufacturers: +200M units (multiple sites)

However, new capacity will not be fully online until late 2028.

Recommendations for Buyers

  • Place orders 12-18 months in advance
  • Qualify multiple suppliers
  • Consider alternative technologies (mmWave radar) where appropriate
  • Build safety stock of critical sensors
