June 30, 2026 – Beijing, China – China Tightens Building Energy Standards
China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has announced updated building energy codes that require occupancy sensors in all new commercial and residential buildings starting January 1, 2029.
Key Requirements
- All new commercial buildings must have occupancy sensors in every room
- Residential buildings must have sensors in common areas (hallways, lobbies, amenities)
- Sensors must control lighting and HVAC systems
- Lights must turn off within 15 minutes of space becoming unoccupied
Market Impact
The mandate is expected to drive massive demand for PIR sensors in China:
- Approximately 2 billion square meters of new construction annually
- Estimated 200-300 million sensors per year by 2030
- Market value: $500-800 million annually
“This is the largest single market driver for PIR sensors in history,” said an industry analyst. “Chinese manufacturers are already ramping up production capacity.”
Local manufacturers including Senba Sensing and Hanwei Electronics are expected to benefit significantly from the mandate.
Compliance Timeline
- January 2029: All new building permits must comply
- January 2032: Major renovations must comply
- January 2035: Existing large buildings must retrofit
