January 2026 – Panasonic Industry Launches Revolutionary Flat PIR Sensor
Panasonic Industry announced in January 2026 the launch of its first flat-lens PIR sensor incorporating the new PaPIRs+ technology. This represents a significant advancement in motion sensing, with redesigned pyroelectric elements delivering twice the sensitivity of the previous PaPIRs generation.
Key Innovations
The new Flat Wide Detection Type sensor features 416 detection zones, providing gap‑free motion sensing across its entire field of view. This high zone density enables reliable detection of very small movements, including minor motion from seated individuals.
The sensor reliably detects tangential, radial, and minor motion, validated under standardized IEC63180 measurement norms. This makes it suitable for true occupancy detection in office environments, not just simple motion triggering.
Technical Specifications
- Field of View: 136.4° × 135.4°
- Coverage: Approximately 15 meters diameter at 3.0 meters ceiling height
- Detection Zones: 416 (gap‑free)
- Lens Diameter: 32.6 mm
- Current Consumption: Available in 1 µA to 170 µA variants
- Output Options: Digital (open-drain) and analog (op-amp)
- Operating Temperature: –20 °C to +60 °C
Design Advantages
The flat lens addresses a long-standing aesthetic requirement from architects and lighting designers who prefer discreet, low-visual-impact hardware. Despite its slim appearance, the lens supports O-ring sealing for higher ingress protection ratings, making it suitable for demanding installations where appearance matters.
Target Applications
- Office environments requiring detection of seated workers
- Hotels and public buildings with aesthetic requirements
- Professional lighting control systems
- Building automation and smart lighting
- High-end residential installations
Availability
The new Flat PaPIRs+ sensors are available now through Panasonic’s distribution channels. Sample kits and evaluation boards are also available for designers.
