But many plastics block infrared, rendering the sensor useless.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Most Plastics Block IR<\/h2>\n<p>Common plastics like acrylic (Plexiglas), polycarbonate (Lexan), and ABS are opaque to infrared in the 8-14\u00b5m range. They may look clear to visible light, but they absorb thermal IR.<\/p>\n<h2>What Materials Work?<\/h2>\n<p>Materials that transmit IR:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Polyethylene (PE):<\/strong> Thin film transmits IR well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polypropylene (PP):<\/strong> Similar to polyethylene.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Silicon:<\/strong> IR-transparent, expensive and fragile.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Germanium:<\/strong> Excellent IR transmission, very expensive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Testing Your Cover Material<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Place the sensor facing a warm object (like your hand).<\/li>\n<li>Measure the output signal.<\/li>\n<li>Place the candidate material between sensor and hand.<\/li>\n<li>If signal drops significantly, the material is not suitable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Solutions<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Use IR-transparent material (thin polyethylene film).<\/li>\n<li>Leave an opening for the sensor.<\/li>\n<li>Use a sensor with built-in IR-transparent cover.<\/li>\n<li>Recess the sensor behind an opening, not a cover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Don&#8217;t assume that clear plastic is IR-transparent.
