Google has released a firmware update for the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) that improves the device’s PIR presence detection algorithms. The update, version 8.5, reduces false “away” events by 50% while maintaining energy savings.<\/p>\n
The updated algorithm uses machine learning to better distinguish between stationary occupants (reading, watching TV), pets moving through the room, and environmental noise (sunlight, HVAC airflow).<\/p>\n
Google claims the new algorithm reduces false away events by 50% compared to the previous version, while still delivering 15-20% energy savings.<\/p>\n
The update also adds a new “Presence Learning” feature that adapts to household routines over time, pre-warming or pre-cooling the home before occupants typically return.<\/p>\n
