Thermal Radiation from Panels<\/h3>\n<p>Solar panels get hot in the sun \u2013 often 40-60\u00b0C. They radiate significant infrared. If a PIR sensor has a view of the panels, it may detect them as large warm objects. When clouds pass, the panels cool rapidly, creating changing IR that mimics motion.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Electrical Noise from Inverters<\/h3>\n<p>Solar inverters (especially cheaper ones) generate high-frequency switching noise that can couple into sensor wiring, causing false triggers.<\/p>\n<h2>Symptoms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>False triggers on sunny days, especially when clouds are moving.<\/li>\n<li>Triggers correlated with inverter operation (e.g., during peak production).<\/li>\n<li>Sensor works at night but not during day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Solutions<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Reposition Sensor<\/h3>\n<p>Aim the sensor away from solar panels. Use walls or other structures to block the view.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Shade the Sensor<\/h3>\n<p>Ensure the sensor itself is not in direct sun (which can also cause problems).<\/p>\n<h3>3. Add EMI Filtering<\/h3>\n<p>For inverter noise, add ferrite beads and capacitors on sensor power and signal lines. Use shielded cable.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Separate Power Supplies<\/h3>\n<p>Power the sensor from a different circuit than the inverter. Use a battery or separate wall wart.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Use a Different Sensor Technology<\/h3>\n<p>Microwave sensors are unaffected by thermal radiation from panels and may be less susceptible to inverter noise.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Time-Based Filtering<\/h3>\n<p>If interference occurs only during peak sun hours, you could temporarily adjust sensitivity \u2013 but this is a workaround.<\/p>\n<h2>Case Study: Rooftop Security Camera<\/h2>\n<p>A security camera with PIR was mounted on a roof near solar panels. It false-triggered constantly on sunny days.
