But many plastics block infrared, rendering the sensor useless. This article explains what works and what doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Most Plastics Block IR<\/h2>\n<p>Common plastics like acrylic (Plexiglas), polycarbonate (Lexan), and ABS are opaque to infrared in the 8-14\u00b5m range. They may look clear to visible light, but they absorb thermal IR.<\/p>\n<h2>What Materials Work?<\/h2>\n<h3>Materials that transmit IR:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Polyethylene (PE):<\/strong> Thin film (e.g., plastic bags) transmits IR well. Thicker sheets may work but lose transmission.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polypropylene (PP):<\/strong> Similar to polyethylene.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Silicon:<\/strong> IR-transparent, but expensive and fragile.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Germanium:<\/strong> Excellent IR transmission, very expensive.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Special IR-transmitting plastics:<\/strong> Some manufacturers make IR-transparent plastics for sensor windows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Testing Your Cover Material<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Place the sensor facing a warm object (like your hand).<\/li>\n<li>Measure the output signal (use oscilloscope or LED).<\/li>\n<li>Place the candidate material between sensor and hand.<\/li>\n<li>If signal drops significantly, the material is not suitable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Symptoms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Sensor works without cover, fails with cover.<\/li>\n<li>Detection range severely reduced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Solutions<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Use IR-Transparent Material<\/h3>\n<p>If you need a cover, use thin polyethylene film (0.1-0.5mm). A plastic bag stretched over the opening can work.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Leave an Opening<\/h3>\n<p>Design the enclosure with an open window for the sensor. Cover with a mesh if needed for protection (mesh must be IR-transparent or have large openings).<\/p>\n<h3>3. Use a Sensor with Built-in Cover<\/h3>\n<p>Some outdoor sensors come with IR-transparent housings designed for the purpose.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Recess the Sensor<\/h3>\n<p>Mount the sensor so it&#8217;s recessed behind an opening, not behind a cover.<\/p>\n<h2>Case Study: Hidden Sensor in Smoke Detector<\/h2>\n<p>A user tried to hide a PIR sensor inside a plastic smoke detector enclosure.
